A Letter to a Morning Radio Show.
Many of you know that Rocket 95.1 has Rick and Bubba on in the mornings from 6 until 10. I often listen to their mindless blather in the mornings because they can tend to be funny and unlike Bob and Tom they don’t get stuck in the rut of Dick and Fart jokes all the time. The problem is that they tend to express their opinions on everything a little too much, especially when they themselves say that certain actors in Hollywood should just move to Canada or France or where ever.
They finally annoyed me enough that I wrote them a letter today. It goes as follows:
Dear Rick and Bubba,
I’ve listened to your show off and on for several years and while you have made me laugh many times I have recently had a hard time listening to you.
What sparked this email was listening to you talk about the recent Newsweek article that went behind the scenes of both the Kerry and Bush campaigns. While I will freely admit Newsweek is pretty anti-Bush, the fact of the matter is there was a reason why they didn’t publish that article until the election was over. Newsweek essentially cut a deal with both campaigns that if they would not publish the material until after the election, the campaigns would allow them inside the campaigns to see and write about what really went on. It had nothing to do with Liberal or Conservative and everything to do with sticking to a deal they made.
The underlying problem here is an attitude that you help to promote on your show. If you don’t like it you can move to another country. It’s the attitude that the majority rules so we don’t have to think about the rest of the country. Unfortunately, in this case the rest of the country is 48% of AMERICANS. I completely understand that it’s your show and you can say whatever you want to. However, you are in a unique situation in that you potentially reach millions of people. Therefore, you have a unique responsibility to at the very least try to help heal the rift that splits our nation. Why? Because the fact of the matter is whether you voted Republican or Democrat we all have one common bond, we are all AMERICANS. There is nothing unpatriotic about chastising a President when he does the wrong thing. There is nothing unpatriotic about demanding accountability. There is a difference between saying that we went to war for the wrong reasons and spitting in the face of an American Soldier. My father served in Vietnam and I am and will forever be proud of the commitment and sacrifice that he made for this country as I am proud of the men and women who serve in the Armed forces today. For that reason it is imperative that we push our government to use those troops and their sacrifices in the right ways. It is imperative that we protect our troops, ALL of our troops with the best equipment possible.
Let’s talk about religion. You call yourselves Christians but you tell people who don’t share your political beliefs they should just leave the country. Do you honestly think Christ would have the same attitude you have? Need I say more about the picture you, as people who reach millions of listeners, portray of all Christians?
You call yourselves “The Two Sexiest Fat Men Alive.” You are proud to have a statue of “Bob’s Big Boy” outside your studios. What makes you believe you any more right to express your opinions on politics than any Hollywood actor? You are professional “Jackasses” what gives you the right to express your OPINIONS of politics at all?
I’ll tell you the answer to those questions. You live in the United States of America and therefore you have the wonderful right to express any opinion you may have. Why do you deserve that right more than any other American? Is it because you believe you are right and they are wrong? Do you believe that because you are in the majority for now that the opinions and wishes of those in the minority should NOT be heard, heeded, or listened to? Wasn’t Christ in the minority? What would have happened if no one listened to Jesus?
I believe that the United States of America is the greatest nation in the world. That doesn’t mean it can’t be better or that we should stop trying to make it better. There is only one way for that to happen. It starts with people like you. You have the ability to help heal some of the division that we have in our country, instead you exacerbate the problem by telling people to move to Canada.
I’m an AMERICAN, I love my country and I would die protecting my country, but that doesn’t mean I like the direction we’re heading. It is the responsibility of ALL Americans to express their concerns and opinions because that’s the only way we can affect change. It is the responsibility of ALL Americans to educate themselves on the issues and not vote for a candidate because that’s the way their Dad or Mom has always voted. It is time for ALL Americans to take their collective heads out of the sand and start really looking at what’s going on in our country and our world today. It’s certainly not enough to simply believe what the two of you broadcast about politics.
I challenge you to read this letter on the air, have me on your show, or call me! I’ll attach me contact info at the end of this letter.
There are certainly times when I love your show. I believe that deep down you really mean well, but I’m concerned that you continue to pick at the wounds we have as a nation and we really need to do some healing.
Thanks for taking the time to read this letter, I know it’s long but I think it’s important that we as a nation start showing a little respect for each other. It’s one thing to talk trash in sports, but this is so much more important than sports.
Thanks again for reading and I look forward to hearing from you in someway.
Sincerely,

I still maintain that listening to Rick and Bubba kills brain cells.
It’s a damn good letter. Hopefully they’ll read it.
Not that I expect it to do any good. They’ll probably label you a sore-loser liberal. *grin*

I think I side with Sarah on this about their show making you stupid. I’d write a similar letter if similarly peeved, and they’d call me liberal … until I showed ‘em my ballot. Or something.

Wonderful letter. It touched my heart. Even if they never respond to you, the seed is planted. They won’t be able to forget it.

Well, incase anyone checks these comments, they did respond. I think I deleted the emails, but if I still have them I’ll post an update and let everyone read what they had to say.
